Format and sentence structure...

I
stick to this concept
rigidly but somewhat flexible
with one word on the 1st line, then

Three
or four on the
2nd line with increased
word length on subsequent 3rd or 4th

And
then I skip a line if
possible and play with indents or
font size to fit it all on the backside page.

I
also break up
the sentence structure creating
speed bump like chaos to slow the reader

Together
with word usage
and arrangement of font
pattern having multiple meanings.


Readers and owners of the cards have told me that re-reading finds new meanings. Some of these folks may either be fans of mine, or are being cordial since I gave them the cards. When asked their intended usage of the cards, the usual answer given is not. Rather, their intended use is to be mounted & framed. I suspect that is because of the hand processing with graphics so realistic that fingernails attempt to pry them up along the shadow line on quality paper. They are packaged in crystal clear non-acid sleeves. Cards are purposely letter size ivory colored stock half folded to 5-1/2” x 8-1/2”. I often enclose typed letters, proposals, invoices or most any other form of communication via artifact. I should also mention that most all the cards are portrait orientation. Even with landscape pictures rotated 90° to read from the right edge allowing increased size ratio with text captions read from the bottom edge. (A carryover from my architectural and engineering drawing document composition.)

I bend some rules writing and break others. It is the snapshot of my brain / thoughts / memories / observations / connects that I'm going for.
After a first sampling, the tendency is to delve deeper. I don't usually rhyme, but reason is frequently obvious. My thought is that some count eggs when they should be observing the free-range chickens.

Artists in word or deed…

may fear exposure but they tend toward bravery...
The wife of an elderly Mennonite farm couple wrote biographically of her heritage, childhood, courting, church and family years. She had it published in brochure form; center stapled, and gave copies at Christmas to the grandchildren and other family members of interest. When her sweet, quiet, gentle husband read it, he said to her..."You've undressed us in public."

Us artist types and even not so types reveal much of our personhood to the world through the works of our minds and hands be it word, clay, color or other. Many times we know not what we do, unconsciously exposing ourselves with intimate care not realized but realized.

I have a growing series of self-portraits taken over the years, paired with revealing prose. These are presented as cards under the people category & writing (on this website).

In the gap of college between technical failure and success…

I wrote for a sociology class. Sometimes it was to be without name or signature. I found out that when you write using a big black fountain pen and open flowing script, you couldn’t hide your identity. Lesson learned. I don't hide now either, nor use a common pen unless uncommonly.

The links between thoughts expressed are often dotted. I tend to be like a ground hog...you see my mind exposed here, but it goes out of sight to pop up where unexpected and bewildering until the line spontaneously becomes known in retrospect. I have a tendency to say..."Is it the perception of truth that is perceived as truth, rather than the truth?” It is, most usually.
